Scorchers follow WSL to Cup Final!!

Sunday 1st November 2015 was the day...the time 3pm....the place - New York Stadium, Rotherham...the tension was immense! For Arsenal Ladies FC and Notts County Ladies FC, this was the season ending thriller - the WSL Continental League Cup Final! Who would take the last piece of silverware of the season??

Notts County LFC Management & Players arriving, with England Lionesses Carly Telford & Laura Bassett (left) and Jess Clarke & Desiree Scott (England & Canada Internationals respectively) at the helm (above)!

Arsenal, a long-time dominant force in the Women's game had already arrived! The Notts County Ladies, voted team of the season the previous day, were in confident mood - looking to cap an amazing season! Our former community player, Sophie Walton (#14) was with the squad, ready and waiting!

At the Notts County Ladies Team Coach!

Scorchers players and families arrived in Rotherham, on a cold but sunny afternoon! There was time to take in the atmosphere - food, photos, a few FA sponsored competitions, even time to see the NCLFC Team Coach and meet team mascots for both of these WSL teams!

Meeting the mascots

Once through the turnstiles, it was time to take in the atmosphere – split loyalties, but this this was going to be a cracking game!

Showing our support!

The teams lined up, we all stood for the Nation Anthem! and following formalities, it was kick off! Who would be victorious, who would take the Cup?

Notts County were straight out of the blocks, dominating possession, keeping the ball well, creating chances. A number of times, Jess Clarke went close… was this the day? The Lady Pies were playing with great intensity, passion, and little response from the Gunners! The County fans singing their hearts out, spurring their team on!
But then, Arsenal found a way through - Jordan Nobbs slotting home – it’s 1-0 to the Gunners!

Notts County showed great character, creating more chances, but wait, a strong challenge from England international Laura Bassett … oh no! The Referee has shown Red! Gutted… the Lady Pies down to 10 players! That’s surely going to change the game! And indeed it has! 2-0 .. Nobbs getting her second from 25 yards out!
Half Time!
The second half was going to be tough – County 2-0 down and 10 players!
They showed great character in the second half, creating chance with Desiree Scott blasting just over the bar! Arsenal kept the ball better and opened up the County defence and in injury time it was 3-0, a great solo effort from Ubogagu!
Full Time - The Gunners were the winners, but the Lady Pies did themselves proud – one decision changing the game – but that’s football!
Our players and families had a great day out, seeing Women’s football at the highest level!
Thanks to all those who attended and hope you all enjoyed the day!!

Another day when Scotton Travels!!
